Chambal river bridge: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this breathtaking and picturesque 6-lane bridge in Rajasthan's Kota. The 6-lane cable-stayed bridge has been built across the Chambal river at Kota and will be opened for traffic soon. The 30 metres wide bridge is 1.4 kilometre long. Its height is 125 metres, with the longest span at 350.5 metres, that is 1,150 feet. The cable stayed bridge over the Chambal river has been built at an approximate cost of Rs 277.67 crore. The work on the 1.4-km bridge started in November, 2006. The construction had to be halted for five years after one of its pillars collapsed. The work resumed in 2014. The bridge is a part of the East-West Corridor of the Golden Quadrangle Project of the National Highways Authority of India.
The opening of cable-stayed bridge in Kota completes the work on the 3,300-km East-West Corridor, which will connect 14 National Highways passing through seven states and 28 prime cities of the country. The hanging bridge will facilitate a smooth movement of vehicles from Porbandar in Gujarat to Silchar in Assam. As an alligator sanctuary falls under the bridge over the Chambal River, a 700-metre stretch of the bridged has been suspended with cables, thus giving it the name, "hanging bridge".
BEHIND THE SCENES: It took as many as 10 years for the project to be completed and build India's longest hanging bridge. The construction kicked off on Chambal river in 2007. After years or work and patience, the project was completed this year.
TECH BEHIND THE HANGING: India's Hanging Bridge has special systems installed. The state of the art system is capable of handling extreme traffic-jam situations and is built to handle heavy rains, winds, storms, and is even equipped with earthquake notification which is sent to the control room of the bridge.
