Muharram is a Muslim festival that marks the beginning of Islamic year. This year, Muharram falls on the 4th of November and it is a gazette holiday in India. Most Muslims fast during the daylight hours on 9th and 10th days of the month.
The interesting part about Muharram is that “not all Muslims” celebrate the festival with a happy intent. A majority of the community people consider it as a day of mourning remembering the Battle of Karbala.
Prayers, meetings and loud music are an essential part of Muharram. Both the Sunnis and Shias celebrate Muharram worldwide. Muharram marks the commemoration day of the death of Immam Hussain, who was Prophet Muhammed’s grandson. People believe that he was tortured before death and hence, the followers beat themselves up in order to pay their heart to the death of Immam Hussain.
