Musical Evenings during the Jaipur Literature Festival 2012

Like we all know Jaipur Literature Festival starting from January 20, 2012 is not even a week away. Preparations are already in a full swing and we are here to bring you all the event updates related to Jaipur Literature Festival.

Now this is specially  for those who relish the musical notes with the words of literature, here are four musical evenings for them. The musical evenings at Jaipur Literature Festival are no less than any classy ones. So don’t think of giving them a miss!

The musical four nights will have the touch of Rajasthani. Pop, Sabri Bothers, Sufism, band and Sahrang, with world wide artists performing in it.

Below is the details of the programs which will mark the evening musical nights here in Jaipur.

Jaipur Kawa Brass Band

With a fantastic energy and humor, the artists of this gypsy brass band play the clarinet and trumpet on stage and walk in parade offering nothing less than the soul of the contemporary Indian.

Rajasthani Musicians: Chugge Khan, Nathoo Lal Solanki, Fire Eaters & Dancers

Nathoo Solanki, Chugge Khan, other Rajasthani musicians, enchanting dancers & fire-eaters come together in a mesmerizing performance combining the folk traditions of north western region of India. Sufi traditions & bhajans to popular folk songs of Rajasthan, the performance will be interspersed with captivating dances like the Ghoomar, Kalbelia  & Terah Taali.

Gods Robots

Their sound is a groundbreaking blend of electronic and organic music pairing the Indian classically trained Taamara with seasoned producer/ DJ Janaka Selekta. Taamara’s powerful English lyrics and soulful Carnatic singing seamlessly combines with Janaka’s instrumental compositions to create a magical sound that defies genres.

Sabri Brothers:

The Sabri Brothers (Aftab Sabri and Hashim Sabri) are Qawwals fromPakistan. Trained from a very young age by their father Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan, the famous classical vocalist of India, the duo believes that lyrics & mood are the most important elements for Qawwali singing. They have performed in India and all over the world including New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1975.

Papon:

Papon’s repertoire covers the traditional Vaishnavite devotional songs ofAssamto new-age electronica.  Singer, composer, programmer and producer, Papon’s music has been called ‘new and free’.

Sanjeev Thomas:

Sanjeev has pioneered India’s original rock acts Buddhas Babies and Buddha Blown. His band, Rainbow Bridge Band is successfully attempting to redefine the music scene in India by addressing contemporary issues through their songs. Sanjeev along with Ashok Cherian has also composed and performedI ndia’s first Rock Opera, “The Fallen” at the Hindu Theatre Festival.

Saurav Mandal:

Saurav hails from Hingalgunj, on the border of Bangladesh.   His music has the deep rooted ethos of the folk ‘Baul’ music of Bengal. He has a band of his own that performs in the countryside with boatmen, called the “Majhi Mallah”.

Pankhi Dutta:

It takes a lot of courage to pursue one’s own passion and the situation becomes trickier if you are an already established professional. Dr.Pankhi Dutta is a qualified doctor (MBBS and MD), Guwahati. Her love for music brought her to Mumbai, where she has been learning classical music from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.

Shruti Pathak:

Shruti Pathak is a Filmfare Award-nominated Indian playback singer and lyricist who sings in Bollywood films. Her career came alive with the song ‘Mar Jaawa’ from Fashion. Adding Dev D to her resume, Shruti Pathak’s career graph is moving upward slowly and steadily.

Dub Colossus

This project is the vision of Dub Colossus – Dubulah – aka Nick Page. Composer, guitarist, bass player and programmer Nick has worked with a long list of notable artists and eccentrics. In 1990 he formed Trans-Global Underground with Tim Whelan and Hammid Man-Tu and in 1997 he formedTempleofSoundwith Neil Sparkes.

Ustaad Eltaf Mohammed Saharang

Ustaad Eltaf Hussain Sarahang of Afghanistan represents the best in the Indo-Afghan tradition of vocal classical music.  Born in Kabul,  Ustaad Eltaf learned classical music from his grandfather and his father Ustaad Mohammad Hussain Sarahang.  His voice captures the essence of his gharana—clear and rich, at ease with pithy vistars, rhythmic behalavas and intricatetaans.

Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt featuring Satvik Bhatt

Creator of the Mohan Veena and winner of a Grammy Award with Ry Cooder for their World Music Album, A Meeting by the River, Vishwa Mohan has mesmerized the world with his delicate yet fiery music. A disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar, Vishwa Mohan also trained with his guru Swami Haridas.

Parvathy Baul

Parvathy Baul is acclaimed for her masterful solo rendition in the oldest style of Baul song and dance. She sings with minimal use of Baul instruments like Duggie, Ektara and Nupur all played at the same time. She has inherited this style from Shri Sanatan Das Baul, who followed the style of legendary Baul Singer-Practitioner Shri Nitai Khapa.

Duncan Bridgeman from 1 Giant Leap

Duncan Bridgeman from 1 Giant Leap will be performing material from both albums. Along with singer Krupa and bass player and beats merchant Trufix the performance will feature local Rajasthani musicians and collaborations with other performers present at the Jaipur festival making it a unique experience.
