It used to be quite a trek to Jaipur’s Jaigarh Fort, the cobbled walkway just under a kilometer long but too steep for the elephants that bring visitors to Amber Fort down the hill. Last month, a fleet of four golf carts was pressed into service to take tourists from Amber to Jaigarh, reducing the uphill task to a 10-minute joyride. Underfoot, an eighteen century old corridor that tunnels through the hill to connect the two forts is being inaugurated by Tourism Minister Bina Kak and Princess Diya Kumari on Sunday and thrown open for tourists and local public. There will be no entry fee for the tunnel.
The tunnel was believed to have been constructed as a defense mechanism. In case of an attack on AmberPalace, the royal family, noblemen and others could be evacuated undetected from the palace to the fort which was well defended by the army. This 325 metre-long tunnel was discovered during excavation a year ago.
The tunnel would give a royal feel of the era while going through the tunnel and it would be an adventurous trip for the tourists, this season!!
