Every year, May18th is considered as the World Museum Day. Today on the “World Museum Day” let us introduce you to the famous museums of Rajasthan that form an intrinsic part of the tourist attractions of Rajasthan. The museums of Rajasthan are the repository of the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan that speak of the valor and chivalry, the brutal wars and the glorious conquests of the days gone by. The famous museums of Rajasthan are:
City Palace Museum, Jaipur
The City Palace complex has a museum nestled amidst old buildings, temples and the palace quarters that exhibit the ancestral collections built up by the successive rulers of Amber and Jaipur such as paintings, manuscripts, maps, carpets, textiles, costumes, weapons and armors.
Albert Hall Museum, Jaipur
The Albert Hall Museum is the oldest museum of Rajasthan and was built in 1876 when King Edward VII visited India as the Prince of Wales I. This museum has variety of rare articles on its display including metal and wood crafts, pottery, arms and weapons, textiles, carpets, paintings, flora and fauna of the state, toys, dolls and the famous carpet, which depicts the scene of a Persian garden with running water streams.
Government Museum, Ajmer
The Government Museum is located in the fort of Ajmer that was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1570. It exhibits sculptures in the excavations of the old villages of the region such as Noh, Mallah, Bareh, Bayana dating back to 1st century to 19thcentury and also the arms and weapons belonging to Jat rulers of the medieval period, paintings, manuscripts, zoological specimens, and local arts and crafts.
Mehrangarh Fort Museum, Jodhpur
The Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur has a beautiful museum that boasts of rare and interesting artifacts, textiles, painting and transport items. Its Palanquin Gallery and Howdah Gallery display some of the most captivating historic items that are both old and expensive.
Fateh Prakash Palace Museum, Chittorgarh
The Fateh Prakash Palace, located within the Chittorgarh Fort, houses an exquisite museum that showcases post-medieval sculptures dating back to 8th-9th century along with beautiful clay models of local tribal people in their traditional outfits.
Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum, Udaipur
A unique museum, the Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum of Udaipur helps in the preservation of the heritage of folk music and dance of the region and displays dresses, dolls, masks, musical instruments and paintings. The puppets are especially noteworthy here.
Govt. Museum, Jaisalmer
The Government Museum in Jaisalmer opened in 1984, houses a large collection of wood and marine fossils and sculptures dating back to the 12th century from the ancient townships of Kiradu and Lodurva that depicts the graceful youth of those times.
Recognize the role of museums across Rajasthan in enhancing heritage awareness and social identity, today on World Heritage Day. Spend at-least half a day exploring the museums and most important, do not touch the artifacts that are preserved in the museum.
