Gangaur is one of the most important festivals for the locals of Rajasthan. The word ‘gan’ stands for Lord Shiva and ‘gaur’ stands for the goddess Parvati. Hence, Gangaur celebrates the union of the two and symbolizes happiness and joy in marriage
Gangaur marks the end of winter and the coming of spring according to the Hindu Calendar. Girls and married women throughout the state celebrate this festival with a variety of beautiful dances and processions. This festival is celebrated especially by unmarried girls, who pray to the idols of ‘Gan’ and ‘Gaur’ wishing for a good husband. The married women pray for their husbands to remain in good health and to prosper in life.
The Gangaur Festival showcases many sites of beauty and happiness as women decorate their hands with henna and the intricately carved idols of Gan and Gaur are immersed into a pond or lake on the last day of the festival.
A traditional procession takes place in Jaipur, which commences from the City Palace and passes through Tripolia Bazaar, Chhoti Chaupar and Gangauri Bazar. The procession is headed with colourfully decorated elephants, chariots, bullock carts and folk artists singing traditional Rajasthani chants.
