The Maharaja turns 18!
Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur celebrated his 18th birthday with all the traditional pomp and fanfare on 12 July, 2016. He hopped off his polo horse at Milfiled School in England, where he is currently studying, and was flown back into Jaipur for the rituals involved in the ceremony. The extravagant City Palace played host to the grand celebrations after several decades, the previous being for Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the last ruling Maharaja of Jaipur.
The young scion’s first stop was the Chandra Mahal, where he performed the ceremonies of Prayashitta Dan, Chhaya Dan and Gau dan. Next he was escorted by his personal staff as he visited several temples including Shri Sita Ramji Bada and Madho Niwas Mataji. To end the tour, he entered the Sabha Niwas Darbar Hall in his finery. He walked under a pink and gold silk umbrella into the full court of former nobles offering him Nazar, a traditional form of respect. Later, his sister, Rajikumari Gauravi Kumari performed an aarti at the Riddhi Siddhi Pol, following which the Maharaja received salute by the Jairgarh Guard. The final stop in the day was to seek blessings at the Jamwai Mata temple in Ramgarh. The day of traditional ceremonies was capped off with celebrations at the City Palace, with the Maharaja cutting a large cake, fit for a king!
