The Sawai Madhopur railway station in eastern Rajasthan, gateway to the renowned Ranthambore National Park, has won the National Tourism Award 2014-15 for the ‘Best tourist-friendly railway station’. Visitors to it are greeted by startlingly beautiful art depicting Ranthambore’s diverse fauna in its natural habitat, including colorfully rendered scrub jungles, banyan trees, leopards, bears, darters, tree-pies, and the fabled tigers — a pleasant surprise when compared with the dull and pan-stained walls commonly seen elsewhere. In addition to its beautification, Sawai Madhopur, earlier notified India’s first heritage railway station, boasts of world-class facilities in drinking water, retiring rooms and bio-toilets, and passenger-friendly platforms.

Two master painters from the Ranthambhore School of Art, Gajanand Singh and Narayan Singh, led the project featured over approximately 7,000 square feet. Murals on the walls and ceilings have given life to the former station. Over 5,000 feet of the station's walls are painted with the flora and fauna that the reserve hosts. Witness the images of tigers to darters, tree-pies, hyenas, bears, leopards and the Banyan tree. The living art museum of wildlife has created a vibrant junglescape.

Sawai Madhopur Railway Station is one of the stops for luxury trains such as Palace on Wheels, Maharajas' Express and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. The station has itself become a marvel for the travelers. The graphic paintings are definitely attention grabbing. Proceeding form the station one of the most memorable wildlife adventures await. The Ranthambore national park was the erstwhile hunting lodge of the Maharajas of Rajasthan. The Ranthambore Fort stands as testimony to the era. Sawai Madhopur retains the charm of the bygone era.
