Every blog tells you about things to do in a city, so we, at ThingsToDoIndia bring you a different perspective for your future travels - Things Not To Do In Jaipur !
Every place has its own set of rules, cultural and social fabric and ethos, and as a traveller it is both a duty and part of experiencing the city, to be aware of them.
Sightseeing
Jaipur is one of the oldest and the earliest planned cities of India and every narrow lane you enter will have places of historic and architectural importance, so by all means give enough time to sightseeing!
But there is so much more to do in the city than just that. So the first thing to avoid doing is restricting yourself!
Jaipur has a rich tradition of various arts and sports, and no trip to the city is complete without delving into the intricacies of them. Set aside a day to learn something new - Horse riding, basics of Polo, Block Printing, Blue Pottery or even a traditional Rajasthani Meal!
Also, the heart of the city is in its narrow lanes and bazaars - so don’t restrict yourself to cars! Get out and on your feet, walk through the markets filled to the brim with food, jewellery, trinkets and fresh produce.
Avoid sleeping in - start your day early. Jaipur wakes up early to the sounds of temple bells and aromas of traditional snacks ready for breakfast, and its a beautiful way to experience the way of life of the city.
Clothes
While the city is growing and the culture is evolving every day, the majority is still very deep rooted in its tradition. Its always a good idea to keep the sentiments of the land in mind and respect the ethos of the people and the place.
Avoid wearing short pants and skirts in busy market areas where your safety might get affected.
Also avoid them in places of worship where you might even be ask to cover your head to be allowed inside.
And if you are here in the city of block prints and tie-dye, why not try the traditional clothing with a local touch and feel like one yourself!
Food
Don’t stick to what you know! You’ll have enough of the pasta and burgers once you’re back home - This is your time to experiment and surprise your taste buds. The local cuisine is a great insight into the soul of a city!
For instance, due to the difficult and arid demography of the region and a lack of green vegetables, the locals here turned to lentils, pulses, legumes, milk, curd and buttermilk, and improvised them to make the delicious local dishes. So much so, that these are now considered ‘Vegetables’ in the cuisine!
But no conversation about Indian Food is complete without the mention of the dreaded Delhi-Belly!
While you must, without question, sample the varied and delicious cuisine of the region and appreciate it in all its spicy glory, it is best to use your discretion when choosing where to eat. Avoid road-side, little known places where hygiene looks doubtful to begin with.
There are a lot of eateries famous for their authentic regional food which also are known for their cleanliness. They will also adapt the food to your palate, so you can go easy on your tummy while enjoying the local food.
Checking the seals on water bottles you purchase is also recommended. Or better still, carry your own bottle of water!
Don't just restrict yourself to eating too. There are experiences like our Rajasthani Cooking Demo, where we invite you to a local noble family’s mansion to experience the art of making the sumptuous dishes and a feast thereafter.
People
People in every place have their particular way of being and it is a good idea to know and respect that.
Use your discretion when clicking pictures and selfies with the locals, and believe us, you will get a lot of requests for them, especially if you are a female traveller.
Giving change to beggars, particularly children, even though a kind gesture, might get you surrounded and hounded as they are children after all, and easily excitable. So again, be cautious. Rather donate to an organisation of your choice, even small things like pens and notebooks go a long way in helping the underprivileged.
The old part of the city, Jaipur’s soul, is a beautiful chaos and it is only fair that you get lost in all its gorgeousness and madness. But still make sure that you and your belongings are safe. Keep you bags, cameras and phone securely with you. Avoid wearing clothes that are too short or revealing. Public display of affection, even though a natural thing to do, is still a taboo and should be avoided or kept to minimum!
Having said that, these guidelines are just that - guidelines. Some tips and suggestions from ThingsToDoInIndia, that would make your travels more fun, safe and unforgettable. The city and its people are warm and welcoming and you will make memories for a lifetime on your travels to the Royal City of Jaipur.
