The Urs Fair is held every year at the tomb of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. This day is regarded as a highly important part of the Islamic calendar as it celebrates the Saint's symbolic union with God. The renowned Saint came from Persia in the medieval era of India and established the Chisti order of "fakirs" in the country.
Pilgrims and devotees from all over the world come to the tomb to pay homage. The celebration starts with the hoisting of a white flag on the tomb by the successor representative of the Chistis. The tomb is then washed with rose water and covered with a beautifully embroidered cloth. Many poems, prayers and religious songs are presented in the Saint's honour. The pilgrims make religious offerings of flowers, money, sandalwood paste and incense. Urs, is the largest Muslim fair in India and is open to people from all backgrounds irrespective of caste, race, or religion.
