Banganga Fair is celebrated annually near the Bairath town. This year, Banganga fair will take place on May06 and 07, 2012. This event is observed on the full moon day of Vaishakh. Bairath forms a major part of excursions from Jaipur. Due to its historical significance, it is visited by a large number of people to its Radha-Krishna ji Temple every year.
Bairath is a place of historical significance, located at a distance of 86kms from Jaipur, on Shahpura- Alwar Road. It is said to have existed from the times of Mahabharata. It used to be the capital of Abhimanyu's (Arjuna's son) father-in-law. After going into exile, the Pandavas are believed to have spent one year in Bairath. Excavations expose the fact that Bairath used to be a part of the Mauryan Empire and thrived as a Buddhist establishment. Other attractions at Bairath are Bhim-Ki-Dungri and Bijak-ki-Pahari.
For Hindus, a visit to the holy site is believed to purify the soul. Devotees gather at the temple singing bhajans (devotional songs) to glorify the deities and then bathe at the steps of the Banganga River, proceeding to the nearby shrines of different gods. Traders come to sell their wares, hawking goods ranging from simple rural ornaments to toys and household items.
