Rajasthan may be India’s driest and most arid state, but when it comes to the sheer color and exuberance, it is hard to beat and is best seen in all its colors at the time of Gangaur, the spring festival dedicated to the goddess of abundance, Parvati. Gangaur is Rajasthan’s very own festival. It celebrates the celestial marriage of Lord Shiva to his consort Parvati. Their human avatars, ‘Ishar’ and ‘Gangaur’ are bedecked and displayed in every noble house all over Rajasthan, two weeks after the festival of Holi.
Gangaur is largely a female-centric festival, in that most of the festivities and pujas are conducted by women. The fortnight leading up to Gangaur, starting today, is marked by fasting and daily pujas of Gauri, and on the day of the festival itself, a bejeweled and beautifully clothed idol of the goddess is the centerpiece of an elaborate procession. The traditional Gangaur procession with all its regal pomp and pageantry will start at 5.30 pm from the Tripoliya Gate, City Palace, winding its way through the Tripolia Bazar, Chhoti Chaupar and Gangauri Bazaar to culminate at Talkatora. The procession will also leave from Talkatora on the next day at the same time. Sitting arrangements for tourists to wish to witness the procession will be made on the roof top of Hind Hotel, opposite the Tripoliya gate.
Over the years, numbers of festivals and fairs have changed in nature; however, the Gangaur procession has retained its traditional charm. Tourists and visitors will get to witness traditional dances and performances like Kachhi ghodi, Kalbeliya, Algoza, Gair and Chakri among others. The procession will include the pageantry of decked up horses, camels and folk dancers along with the Gangaur idol on a silver palanquin!
