The International Museum Day is celebrated across the world on May 18 to raise awareness about contribution of museums to the society. This year the theme proposed by International Council of Museums (ICOM) is 'Museums and Cultural Landscapes'. Under this theme, the museums are being asked to be responsible for their landscapes, to contribute knowledge and expertise and actively look into their management and upkeep.
Coordinated by the International Council of Museums, The International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated to encourage public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. Nearly 35,000 museums in 145 countries participate in the event. This year International Museum Day will be celebrated around the theme 'Museums and Cultural Landscapes', reaffirming the museums commitment to representing and preserving cultural and environmental heritage.
It highlights the responsibility of museums not only to their collections, but also to their environment, including the cities, villages and communities to which they belong, and calls on them to promote and communicate about both their own collections and the cultural and natural heritage around them. Museums of all kinds can contribute to sustainable development by strengthening ties between people and their environment. Museums and Cultural Landscapes asks museums to participate in raising awareness, making them ambassadors of a geographic area and engaging them in actively protecting cultural and natural heritage. The official IMD website has also been launched and features the IMD 2016 poster and web banner in several languages.
A special exhibition to celebrate International Museum Day, 'Rare Glimpses - The Architectural Heritage of Jodhpur' is now open at the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur India. The exhibition which showcases archival photographs of Jodhpur's architectural monuments is now open from 16 - 22 May, 2016 with special exhibitions, performances, crafts demonstrations and short film screenings.
