In a bid to showcase the legacy of Jaipur as a city known for its fine gem cutting, polishing and jewellery craftsmanship, a Museum of Gems and Jewellery is being set up in Jaipur. Apart from being a source of education, the museum will also promote trade and tourism in the State. The museum is being planned as a five floor building with an underground vault and a basement for storage. In addition to this, a Gem Park – Rock Garden where large sculptures, rocks etc. will be on display is also planned. The entire museum complex will be built in an area of 50,000 to 60,000 sq. ft. at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 crores.
The museum will be divided into more than 100 sections with each section representing a particular theme. Some of the sections to be created are ‘Riches in the Rocks’; ‘The Diamond Empire’, ‘Geometry – Inner World of Gemstones’; ‘Red Indian and African Jewellery’, among others. There will also be a 2-3 minute audio or video running in each section explaining the particular theme.
